As with Pieter Brueghel the Younger's work, you need to look a little closer to see what is really going on!
In this seemingly pleasant scene, we can see a large group of people dancing around the maypole and having a merry old time. But look a little closer, and you will find some interesting things going on, such as a sword fight, a man being a bit ill, and a lot of seemingly drunk people!
Pieter Brueghel The Younger was a Flemish renaissance artist in the late 1500’s – early 1600’s and is famed for artwork that depicted the wickedness of humankind and peasant life. He was influenced by his father Pieter Brueghel The Elder, an artist who also painted in the same vein.
